WATER SCIENCE *

The UDLAP has the commitment with the academic excellence, then is appraised that all students achieve a high level of learning, very significate, profound, critic, innovator, and social relevant. This learning must resolve different professional problems both theoretical or practice in a sharp way. Leaving behind the superficial, routine, mechanical or non-reflexive learning.

The objective is to provide at student with a solid education to develop research that yields original knowledge, technological development, and/or innovation, as well as to offer a rigorous preparation for academic and/or professional development. To achieve this, students will thoroughly learn the scientific bases, methods, and techniques of water sciences in order to plan, carry out, and evaluate original research projects, effectively communicating their results, both verbally and in writing.

  • Develop knowledge and technology for hydrological and water quality modeling, as well as for advanced water treatment systems.
  • Establish a research network program on water security in Mexico.
  • Contribute with knowledge, technology and innovation to solve problems in the water sector.
  • Training of highly specialized human resources for the application of new knowledge and technologies in the water sector.
  • Contribute to meet the goals of sustainable supply, sanitation and protection against extreme hydro-meteorological phenomena.

The applicant must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in areas related to the doctoral study program (engineering or science related to water science). He/She must also take the general knowledge and English language exams.

The graduate of the doctorate in water sciences will excel by his/her mastery of the cutting-edge knowledge in this field of work and research and, in particular, by its capacity to generate new knowledge to support the required technological development and innovation for solving problems in the water sector, which are of valuable social impact. The graduates of the program have the following competencies:

  • Have command of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and hydrological science to allow him/her to formulate and solve water science research problems.
  • Apply the fundamental laws of mass balance, energy balance, thermodynamics, kinetics, catalysis, fluid flow, and heat and mass transfer to solve problems related to water science.
  • Master the use of modern computer programs as tools for research, technological development, and innovation in water science.
  • Use the scientific method to design and carry out experiments to prove hypotheses, analyzing their results.
  • Use cutting-edge techniques and tools necessary for water science and environmental engineering.
  • Define a research, technological development, or innovation problem, designing and applying research strategies to solve it.
  • Identify, formulate, and solve research, technological development and innovation problems in the areas of water science and environmental engineering.

The main goal of the Doctorate in Water Sciences is the interdisciplinary scientific and technological work necessary to develop knowledge and technology for hydrological modeling, water quality and advanced water treatment systems. The two main research lines are:

  1. Hydrological processes and modelling. This research line focuses on developing analysis and projects to establish hydrological basin models, as well as pollutant transport models. Studies of urban watersheds, water management analysis and modelling considering hydro-meteorological risks such as floods and droughts, as well as climate change and its effect on water vulnerability are also considered.
  2. Water quality and treatment. This research line covers the study of emerging pollutants, including their detection and removal. It also addresses sustainable biological processes for water treatment. Projects dealing with conventional and advanced water treatment systems, as well as nanotechnology applied to water treatment are a key part of the research line.
